In fall of 2011, students of Morristown Jewish Center Beit Yisrael made handmade picture books for the students of Abayudaya Elementary School in Uganda. Kulanu's president Harriet Bograd delivered the books to Uganda in January, 2012.

Also in fall, 2011, Jeanne Bodin's granddaughter, Emily, collected and carefully selected books for the Abayudaya school library and sent more than 1,000 books to Uganda as the mitzvah project for her bat mitzvah. Jeanne and her daughter Gail (Emily's mom), traveled to Uganda and delivered some of the books, and helped the Abayudaya children make their own books in response to the ones they received.

These projects enhanced the Kulanu-Abayudaya Literacy and Library Program, which was funded by a grant to Kulanu from the South Peninsula Jewish Teen Foundation of the Jewish Community Federation. Photos by Harriet Bograd and Jean Bodin.

(Note, the school is sometimes called the Hadassah Primary School and sometimes called the Abayudaya Elementary School. It has no connection to the international Hadassah organization.)
